1. Hot Topic: Language Workbenches

The affinity of software generators to the concepts of domain-specific languages recently became a hot topic of current discussions. It is particularly remarkable that several vendors are almost simultaneously and independent from each other developing tools which are connecting both things.

In the article "Language Workbenches: The Killer-App for Domain-Specific Languages?" Martin Fowler very clearly explains the interrelationship between domain-specific languages and generators. The examples and concepts he presents make clear that assumable exotic generation techniques have become an important development trend.

“SCORE Data Architecture Integration also influenced the quality of our software development. In the old situation our programmers had to decide what programs were affected by a database change and had to implement the changes by hand. Using SCORE with its automated approach all relevant data access services are checked against a change in the data model and only if there is a compatibility issue a programmer is needed to carry out the necessary changes. As a result of this we have much more certainty that our programs are correctly using the database.”
