"Business Advantage through Software Technology" was the motto of this year’s conference. This requires bespoke software that, moreover, has to be available faster. Delta offers the appropriate tools for it: our generative tools simplify and accelerate software development through more automation.

At this year's OOP in the session "Process Family Engineering – Produktlinien für Prozesse" (Wednesday, January 24, 2007, 2:30 – 3:30 pm) Cord Giese showed how you can economize your software development to a greater extend by applying product line concepts to the modeling and implementation of your business processes. The most important result is the economizing potential of this approach.

Both process modeling as well as product line concepts are established methods to make software development simpler, clearer and more efficient.

Today, process modeling has become an essential part of the development cycle in all application areas. However, application processes are still regarded as singular units: every process is modeled and implemented individually.

Software product lines provide reliable concepts for quality assurance, efficiency enhancement, and the handling of software systems. On the one hand, they help large companies in mastering their software development and, on the other hand, they provide small business companies with an excellent base for their business models.

So, let's have a look at the exciting questions:

• Which synergies can be achieved when applying product line concepts to entire families of business processes?
• In doing so, what can be automated by using model-driven approaches?

Our live demos from such different areas as e-business and automotive showed that the concepts of "Process Family Engineering" are generally applicable – irrespective of the particular domain. This obviously yields an enormous potential for improving productivity.

The information that was given in this OOP lecture primarily addresses software architects and method specialists and, furthermore, all those looking for ways to automate software development to a greater extend. Knowledge in the areas of process modeling, product lines and model-driven development is helpful, but not mandatory.

Cord Giese is responsible for research and development in the area of generative base technologies at Delta Software Technology GmbH. He regularly presents research results at conferences and in publications. Currently his work is focused on new methods and technologies for the automation of software development.

OOP 2007: Business Advantage through Software Technology

In 2007 the OOP as one of the biggest software events in Europe provided a large audience with extensive information about the entire spectrum of modern software engineering. Lectures, tutorials, workshops and field reports familiarized the attendees with the latest trends as well as with proven and tested techniques.

For the first time, the OOP focused on business aspects of the IT which is emphasized by numerous management-related subjects.
